History In A Moment

Monroe Gallery of Photography will feature three distinct exhibits that embody the universal understanding and importance of photojournalism. The first is Tony Vaccaro, now 97, who will be in attendance in Monroe Gallery’s booth. Vaccaro survived WWII, fighting the enemy while also documenting his experience at great risk. Post war, he started his career as a commercial photographer and went on to become one the most celebrated photographers of his day. The second will showcase the work of independent photojournalists covering 21st-century events with a focus on environmental and climate issues. The Gallery will premiere Adam Karls Johansson’s iconic image of Greta Thunburg’s first school strike for climate change and Anna Boyiazis’ series “Finding Freedom in the Water, which was a 2019 Prix Pictet Nominee and received a 2018 World Press Photo Award. The final feature is photographs by Ida Wyman (1926–2019) whose work for Life, Look, and other magazines went unrecognized for decades.
