Black Beauty

Arnika Dawkins Gallery is thrilled to present an exploration of the notions of beauty, especially that of black beauty. It is said that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and can be subjective; this exhibition aims to celebrate and acknowledge an aesthetic that has been long overlooked in the mainstream. Cultural norms in society change swiftly; this artistic project explores these norms from a black perspective and will feature fine art photography by Millennial Ervin A. Johnson; a set of stunning mixed media portraits that honor black life, husband/wife duo Regis and Kahran Bethencourt's shared mission to "shatter the current standards of beauty and to disrupt cultural norms." Allen Cooley highlights beauty asserting different types of beauty standards. Self-taught Nigerian born Oye Diran uses raw emotion through imagery that conveys the essence of his subjects. Collectively, these talented photographers add to the conversation of what black beauty is in all of its permutations!
